Learning English as the Second Language

Abstract

Learning english by using several ways have given some benefits to improve english for non native speaker.  As we know, english is an international language in the world and the second language for Indonesia.  Everybody needs to learn english, because this langauge is a key of money.  If we can english.  We can get a job easier than those who don’t  learn english as a second language.  These methods have given some benefits for non native speaker by using several ways there are using media, books and daily speaking practice.  As we know, english have four skills, there are writing, reading, listening dan speaking.

Learning  English  as  the  second  Language

I.    Introduction

                Language is the most important thing for human being, because with the language every person  knows each other and can communicate to other people.  As we know english is the most important language in the world. So we must learn it, also our country.  English have four skills, there are writing, reading, listening and speaking.  If we want to learning english as  the second language, we must learn four skills in english language.

            Students have to study this language because this language have been adopted to be  part of curiculum.  At junior and senior high school, student must learn english subject because they have to practice english subject for national final examination.   In additon,  some books,  reading books, story books, science and  religion and also technology have been translated to english language.  Not only students and teachers, but also all of people can study  english.

            We can learn english as the second language for non english speaker with several ways,there are using media, using books, and Daily  speaking  practice.

II.        Using Media

            As we know, media is very important for teaching and learning english for non native speaker, because media make us easy to learn english.  We can use media internet and computer to learn english. We have to say thanks very much to scientist who have founded some medias, with this media we can learn english and we can get some information about  teaching and learning english, may be at school, campus or any places. 

A.        Internet

            “Internet is the network formed by the cooperative interconnection of computing networks. In fact, the word Internet was conined from the words interconnection and network”. (Kardhipri, n.d).  Internet can give positive impact and negative impact, but we can use this internet to positive impact by learning english.  We can more easily learn english on the internet than what we imagine.  We can use some ways to learn english on internet for non native speaker, there are email, online english, english newspaper, and skype.

            1.         Email

            “Email, sometimes written as e-mail, is simply the shortened form of electronic mail, a system for receiving, sending, and storing electronic messages”. (Black, May 03, 2012).  Email has given easy to learn english, by email we can ask something to our teachers about our lesson.  If we have some problems in learning english and we can ask to teachers or friends to give some learning materials for study.  As we know in this era, if we want to send our assignment to teachers or friends but they are so far from here.  We just send by email.  Why we don’t send by post ? because we take a long time to arrive to them, so using the email easier than using by post, because the faster, easier and safer.  

            2.         Learning English Online

            Learning english online is a new method to increase our english.  We can learn it and bring laptop to coffee shop and connection with internet. We just buy a glass of tea or coffee for using internet at coffee shop and learning english online  .  We can learn it easily then use english book.  If we want to learn english online, we can join the Englishtown.  Searching in google www.englishtown.com and then we must register first.  We can learn anything about english, may be about writing, listening, reading, or

speaking.  If we have problems, we can ask  them, they will help us.  However, we must pay them money around at $30 dollar a month.

            We can also learn english online anywhere and anytime, may be in the room, in the canteen or anyplace. We just buy a modem, so we can  continue our english.  In englishtown have chat room programs.  We can use it to communicate or share about english.  They will help us, because in this chat room all a people learning english online.  So we can study english  online together.

            3.         English Newspaper  

            We can learn english as the second language with english newspaper.  We can search in google www.jakartapost.com.  If we always read this newspaper everyday around 15 minutes a day by using scan method, we can read 200 words per minute and give benefit to the readers’.  When we read it,  we have to find simple text and find easy vocab to understand and can be improve reading speed step by step.  Newspaper also gives us some information about education, political, culture, religion, economy and sport.

            4.         Skype

    “Skype is a free desktop software program which allows its users to communicate with one another, free of charge, via chat, voice calling or video calling. The service has a wide range of benefits beyond this capability, including the ability for users to call phones and send SMS text messages with pre-paid Skype credit”. (Brook n.d).  We are happy, because skype have given some benefits to learn english by using media internet.  We can use this software, for voice calling our friends and talk in english.  If we have our friends in other country, we can ask  them to tell us something about their country,  scholarship, education or something else.  We can find it in google, we just write www.skype.com, before use it.  We must register first.

             Wa can also use it to call our friends by video calling and we can see their faces.  We ask them, when we are talking with them, please  improve our pronunciation. Pronunciation is very important when we are talking with foreigners.  This software can also via chat with our friends.  We can use this voice calling and video calling.  If we bad mood.  So, it is not a big deal to use this skype to improve our english for non english speaker and make english as the second language.

B.        Computer

            Computer is a new technology in this modern era,because it has given some benefits to some people in completing a job, quickly, simple and efisien.  Also, computer  has given some benefits for students and teacher to use this technology in teaching and learning english.  So, we must use it to increase our english as the second language and also for non native speaker, there are tools and CD-ROM.

            1.         Tools           

 The computer has tool application.  The benefit of this application is easier writing english than in a book.  We can use it in Microsoft word for write something.  If we want to write something in english, may be about our lives, short story, old story and summary in Microsoft word, we can use tools application.  We can find tool application to correct our writing in english, we should give example: If we want write beautiful, but we write beautiful, this word will be corrected by tool and will be marked red underline.

2.         CD-ROM

            “The compact disc has made a dramatic impact on how people listen to music. With the proliferation of CD-ROM, the same delivery medium is beginning to affect how we watch movies, swap photographs, and read books”. (Sony & Philips,  1983).  CD-ROM has given some benefit to improve our english, because we can use it for listening english songs, watch english movies, read english books, and learn english by DVD.  If we use these ways everyday and every time to improve our english as the second language and non native speaker, will become good english.

III.       Using Books

            "A book is something you pick up and read”. (Seibert n.d).  We can use a book to find some materials lesson or english book.  It can improve our english, because in english books , we can study everything about english lesson, like reading, writing, speaking, and listening .  Someone said books is the best teacher in our live and the best experience in the world.  We can use books some places to improve our english and also for non native speaker with several ways there are at library, coffee shop and colportage.

            A.         At Library

            Library is a place that hold some variety books, as education books, story books, novel and can be borrowed to take home.  If we have spare time, we have to come at library for searching some books to increase our english like grammar books, dictionary, reading books, writing books, speaking books and something else.  The library have benefit to non native speaker to learn english as a second language.

B.          Coffee Shop

             As we know, coffee shop in Aceh is very familiar for Acehnese people, because every morning Acehese people drink a glass of coffee or tea.  We should be able to change the character of Acehese people, so it, their spend time in a coffee shop for read some books to increase their knowledge.  If this program run well in community, we would predict, ten years more, Aceh will be advance than another provinces in Indonesia.

              We can learn english not just at school, college or library, because we can learn english at coffee shop, just buy a glass of coffee or tea, and can relax with a glass of coffee while reading some book to increase our english.  It is a new method learn english at coffee shop, we hope the acehese people in 2020 can speak english well by using this method.

C.        Colportage

            Colportage is a comfortable place for learning because in colportage have many  books like education books and storybooks .  We hope to our government make a colportage in order that people want read some books, while rilex at afternoon with our friends or family and this good idea to increase knowledge in society.

            Colportage has given some benefits to increase our english for non native speaker, because we can practice english with our friends by using books or conversation.  It is a suitable place to share everything about english,may be about grammar or pronunciation with our friends and we can make a group to solve the problems in english.

IV.       Daily speaking  practice

                Daily spaking practice is a method to upgrade our english and non native speaker.  If we never daily speaking practice with our friends, teacher, or foreigner, we will never become a master english.  So star from now we must be daily speaking practice anywhere and anytime.  If we have a problem about grammar don’t be sad, because english not our language, we just practice english.

 One time l met a foreigner and l said l can’t speak english well because my grammar is poor, he said, don’t care about grammar first, you must practice your english as you can, and grammar will follow you step by step.  So we must begin from now.  If we want master english, we should do daily speaking practice with friends,teacher or foreigner.

A.        Friends

            We can upgrade english with friends and find some solutions to upgrade our english.  .  We can study and join together to improve daily speaking practice, may be we can make schedule for daily speaking practice.  We have to promise in our self no word but english,anywhere anytime we must speak english and also we can make debate or discussion, may be we want to discussion about why we must learn english in this modern.  We can share or give idea about this title, may be in this modern era english is a key of money.  So, we must star from now to learn english step by step.  We can learn with our friends or teacher anywhere and anytime.

B.        Teacher

            Teacher is a hero without the services, every day and every time he teachs us at school,he gives everything what he knows about her knowledge,

so that student can improve their knowledge better than their teacher.  “To all, the teacher is a mirror that show not only the self but the path and its choices, the task and its demands the difficulties,the joys.  To all and from all, the teacher is a learner,a person and a prism through which the ordinary reveals it self to be miraculous”. (Grow).  So star from now, we must do everything what teacher say and don’t make them are angry.

            We must respect to they,when was teaching english, because one time they will help us when we got some problems in english.  If they want to help us and learn english together. We are smarter faster than our friends, who are not guided with teacher.  So we have to use this golden way as possible to learn english step by step and show up your ablity to your teacher.  This approach has given some benefit for non native speaker to increase english step by step.  

            C.        Foreigner

            As we have seen, native speaker and non native speaker very difference when we talk english, because english language is their language, so they are smart everything about english than us.  If we want to our english like native speaker, we must find foreigner to learn english with him, because when we learn with them, we can find a new experience in speak english.  We are motivated to speak like him and ask  them to become out the best friend.  If he had received into our friends, we can learn english anywhere and any time, as well as improve our pronunciation and mental when we speak english.  If we want do this way, step by step our english like native speaker.  The most important thing in english is experience.

            Finally, we get a new method to increase our english for non native speaker by using some ways as can use media, books, and daily speaking practice.  If we use these methods every day and every time to improve our english.  We will master english, but we must study hard,because learn english not as easy as turning the palm of the hand, so we have to learn english step by step. We must star from now to increase our english by using this method step by step.
